Hopping off the Target train

ok, it took perhaps a few years too long, but I am officially off the Target train. Realising that I don't need their brand of cool, the doodads, etc - and the stores are getting TOO big, they keep building these giant ones now with tons of frozen and refrig food, wtf.
What really sealed it for me was this past week I went in for a few things (with my 10% off coupon)some dogbones, red bull (yes, they have that one good at 5.99 usually)...while waiting in line at the first of 3 Targets I'd vist that night, (I wanted a camera and a boom box)there was a lady in front of me with a conveyer belt full of JUNK - $244 worth of junk, really. She mentioned that she should wait till her coupon comes, that it was probly at home now, zomg - I saw all that disposable crap and said, that's it for me here....but,
---i really liked the display boombox, a Phillips, but none in stock, the guy used his electronic gizmo to see if other stores had it, yes, 3 at another store...ok, also all the dig cameras under $140 were out of stock....so on to the next store, no cameras, no boomboxes....so I thought I'd try the third one since it wasn't that far, no cameras, no boomboxes....the salesman said, "you should go to Best Buy". Yes indeed.
Buh Bye Target.

article "Back in the groove: young music fans ditch downloads and spark vinyl revival"

Back in the groove: young music fans ditch downloads and spark vinyl revival

· Sales of 7in singles rise by 13% in first half of year
· New bands and collectors turning to old format

Katie Allen, media business correspondent
Monday July 16, 2007
The Guardian

The format was supposed to have been badly wounded by the introduction of CDs and killed off completely by the ipod-generation that bought music online.
But in a rare case of cheerful news for the record labels, the latest phenomenon in a notoriously fickle industry is one nobody dared predict: a vinyl revival. Latest figures show a big jump in vinyl sales in the first half of this year, confirming the anecdotal evidence from specialist shops throughout the UK.

It comes as sales of CD singles continue to slide - and it is not being driven by technophobic middle-aged consumers. Teenagers and students are developing a taste for records and are turning away from the clinical method of downloading music on to an MP3 player.
The data, released by the UK's industry group BPI, shows that 7in vinyl sales were up 13% in the first half, with the White Stripes' Icky Thump the best seller.

Two-thirds of all singles in the UK now come out on in the 7in format, with sales topping 1m. Though still a far cry from vinyl's heyday in 1979, when Art Garfunkel's Bright Eyes alone sold that number and the total vinyl singles market was 89m, the latest sales are still up more than fivefold in five years.

For record stores, the resurgence has meant a move from racks of vintage Rolling Stones and Beatles releases to brand new singles and younger buyers. "The student population seem to be loving the 7in," says Stuart Smith, who runs Seismic Records in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire. He sells 300-600 records a week and is preparing to launch an online store.

"I'm still not sure about the MP3 generation. You can have a full hard drive and nothing to show for it. Record collections are very personal. You can view into a person's soul really," he says.

The customers rummaging through racks at his store, a small room above a skate shop, are students and DJs.

When Mr Smith opened the vinyl shop in early 2005, digital download sales were rocketing and, amid rampant piracy, global music revenues were several years into their current downward spiral.

A shop selling LPs and 7in singles didn't sound like the most promising business plan. But when his employers at the local outlet of music chain Fopp - now closed down - decided to stop selling vinyl it was something he couldn't resist.

"I just couldn't understand why they decided to turn their backs on it. I saw an opportunity to do something I love doing. I've been a collector myself for years," says the 31-year-old. "It's just one of things. It just felt right."

Two years on, the White Stripes' Icky Thump has just notched up the highest weekly sales for a 7in single for more than 20 years. Retailers and record labels put the rising vinyl sales down to bands rediscovering the format and to music fans' enduring desire to collect. It's not unusual for fans to buy a 7in but have nothing to play it on, says Paul Williams at industry magazine Music Week. "It's about the kind of acts that have very loyal fan bases that want everything to do with that act," he says. "They maybe will buy the download to listen to, but they get the vinyl to own. It's looked at like artwork."

HMV agrees that vinyl is back from the brink, and the chain has been rapidly expanding its record racks to meet rising demand. The group's Gennaro Castaldo cites the huge popularity of "indie" bands, such as Franz Ferdinand and Arctic Monkeys, which enjoy loyal followings among teenagers and students, especially during the summer festival season.

"Labels have realised that it's cool for bands to release their music on vinyl, especially in limited edition form, which makes it highly collectible," he says.

London company Art Vinyl has built a whole business out of the format's visual and tactile appeal by selling easy-to-open frames to display records and their sleeves.

For fans, buying and owning a record can provide a welcome change from the anonymity of online downloads, says Art Vinyl's founder Andrew Heeps. "If you go into a record shop to buy something, you feel part of something," he says. "The fact that last year we sold over 9,000 frames to people says an awful lot about where the market is going."

Cara Henn, a DJ and regular Seismic Records customer says going to the store puts her in touch with her peers and has hammered home the vinyl trend. "I've really been getting back into my vinyl. I love it," she says. "I like to hear crackling, as if it's actually real. Especially with drum'n'bass, DJs are really encouraging fans to buy vinyl."

---end article - quoted from http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk_news/story/0,,2127345,00.html

Afro Acid in Philly, Pa 071507

Wow.

A beautiful and amazing party. Decorations, light, sound - all were top notch - the lightshow was a-sparklin plenty !
We got there on the early side - always fun to see the party come together. Of the special guests - W.Jeremy, we thought, was the most enjoyable for the harder, techy tracks and technical profiency. Pierre was wild pitching it and had a great set.
Hula hoops were twirlin and flashin (the Philly Hoopers rock!),
and a supa-booty showin hot pants dancer showed up about 3 am.
Fresh fruit, whole and cut up (yummy pineaaple and watermellon) were freely available!!!!!!!!
A very nice house music tradition continues :D
Rob & I had fun...I have blisters on the bottoms of my feet! hahahaha!!!! Lots of dancin going on, they tried to keep it as cool as possible, by 4am half were in, half were out...all grooving to the funky sounds of Mr. Glenn Underground.
Great party, thanks to all involved!!!!!!!!!!!!

I forgot to mention - we went to the wrong party at first...parked on a side street around the corner from the place, and got turned around, heard some music and saw a guy standing outside a door, he ushered us in, saying to go down the steps, down the hall to the right, all the way down anduntil we hear the music. There were doors with differnt insignias on as we passed...we got to the door where we heard the music, but, it was rock music...huh? So we went in, and were greeted warmly by some cool looking people who pointed to a large bpttle of Jack on the table and mentioned that the keg will be tapped soon...cool! But, one problem, we were at the wrong party I informed one of the guys (he was cute too!) - hahahaha!!!!! He said this was some guys (i forget whom) studio party (btw, he said they would probly be playing house music later in the night!

ps - i have some pics and video i'll try to get up soon on youtube (djlindaleigh)

It's my fault

from USA tODAY - "Rappers have long proclaimed their love for Cristal, frequently mentioning the high-end champagne in songs and popping the corks of the clear, gold-labeled bottles in music videos and at nightclubs.
But the makers of Cristal don't seem to feel the same way about hip-hop — at least that's the way one rapper-turned-record executive Jay-Z sees it.

Now president and chief executive officer of Def Jam Records, the multiplatinum rapper has decided to boycott his once-beloved bubbly over comments from Frederic Rouzaud, managing director of Louis Roederer, the company that produces it.

In The Economist magazine, Rouzaud said the company viewed the affection for his company's champagne from rappers and their fans with "curiosity and serenity."
------------VIEW ARTICLE HERE-
http://www.usatoday.com/life/people/2006-06-15-jayz-cristal_x.htm

Well, it is probably my fault - In 1988 or 89 I was socializing with Charles Barkley at Club Enchante' in Cherry Hill (now a Sneaker Stadium store). The next day was opening day of the season, and the guys were hanging out having a good time. Charles had a load of tequila shots lined up, I asked hom if those were for him...he replied with a laugh, no - showing my his light beer, that these were for anyone who wanted them. So I had a few. So then, Charles wanted to get the guys some champagne and ordered Dom. The bartender said they were all out. All out of Dom?! What to do, asked Charles. I piped up, "Dom is ok, have you ever heard of Cristal?" No, he said, and I replied, oh you must try it, it's fabulous, I like it better than Dom.....wellllllll....looks like everyone liked it...and they told two friends, and they told 2 friends, and so on, and so on and....

hahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I realized tonight that abc has become tolerable again with the departure of not only ted koppel, but stone phillips as well...what was up with the way he would do that weird breathing thing when he talked. oh well, the guy they had tonight was pleasant, and the stories good. nice lead in to jimmy kimmel, whom altho i sometimes find a bit crude for my liking, he's way ahead of leno or letterman ... i guess. I really don't listen to anything, you undertand, that is on the tv - I'm usually conversing, netting, or most probly, listening to music, so the only way i know what's being said is by reading the closed captioning...have you ever tried to read that....sometimes they mess up sooo bad....
